    Supported by the Dormant Accounts Fund NI, this exciting new Business Development Director position will take a leading role in the setting up and running of the new limited company and allow Mediation Northern Ireland (Mediation NI) to become a leading social enterprise.

    As a Business Development Director, you will identify new business opportunities to generate revenue, improve profitability and help the business grow. Your work will involve careful strategic planning and positioning in the appropriate markets, and enhancing the operation of the business. You will have a leading role in the organisation and your role will have specific focus on both:

    • B2B (business to business)
    • B2C (business to consumer)

    This business-critical role will include but will not be limited to the following duties:

    • Research and identify new business opportunities and generate leads
    • Meet clients and foster relationships
    • Work and think strategically to help improve the business
    • Create a sales pipeline and plan sales campaigns
    • Develop the business sales and marketing strategy
    • Meet funder targets and contribute to reporting requirements

    Mediation NI awarded six-figure Lottery grant to launch a new company

    Mediation Northern Ireland, founded in 1992, will receive £100,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund that will allow it to expand its services for businesses – and raise revenue to support its charitable efforts.

    A Northern Irish organisation specialising in building positive relationships was today awarded £100,000 lottery funding to expand its work.

    Mediation NI was founded in the early 1990s with a core mission of conflict resolution and fostering peace, specialising in efforts to strengthen relationships in Northern Ireland’s divided society.

    The organisation has helped many people and groups across Northern Ireland, nationally and internationally. With core principles including non-violence, respect and integrity, it also uses its expertise to help groups and organisations in government and business to break down barriers and create common understanding between different groups who have found themselves at odds with each other.

    Mediation NI offers a range of services including direct mediation, training and developing new models of practice in mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution.

    It is a non-profit organisation, but this new funding will allow it to set up a for-profit subsidiary that will help make the whole operation more sustainable.

    Recent research from the Labour Relations Agency found that workplace conflicts cost the Northern Irish economy over £850 million every year.

    The new arm of Mediation NI will offer new training programmes and wrap around services that will help businesses and statutory organisations across Northern Ireland get better at dealing with conflict.

    Enda Young, Director of Mediation NI, said: “We are delighted to receive this support that will allow us to expand our work and also become more financially sustainable.

    “Our vision is for a society that handles conflict better. We do this through promoting positive peace, by providing expertise and support to manage, resolve and transform conflict.”

    The £100,000 grant comes from the National Lottery Community Fund’s Dormant Accounts Fund, which redirects money from forgotten or abandoned bank accounts and directs the cash to good causes.

    Kate Beggs, The National Lottery Community Fund’s Northern Ireland Director, said: “The Dormant Accounts Fund NI is continuing to help secure the future of voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations across Northern Ireland. It is building their capacity, resilience and sustainability, so that they can continue to deliver vital services to local communities.

    “We are pleased to award this £100,000 grant to Mediation NI to expand their work into the private sector which will support their long-term sustainability.”

    Mediation NI launches new Strategic Plan

    Mediation NI unveils plans for growth under new leadership.

    The organisation will take forward an ambitious three-year plan under the leadership of new Managing Director Enda Young.

    The organisation has led on peacebuilding and conflict resolution in the region for more than 30 years, delivering services that support organisations experiencing conflict, change and both internal and external disputes.

    Under the leadership of Enda Young, Mediation NI will expand its workforce and team of associates over the next five years, as well as develop more services aimed at resolving conflict and disputes in the workplace.

    The organisation will also invest in its online training offering, enabling it to provide mediation training to audiences beyond Northern Ireland.

    At its strategy launch in its newly named headquarters, Mediation House today, Managing Director, Enda Young said:
    “The power of talking and mediating between two parties, is always the best way to resolve conflict. That message is no more keenly felt than here in Northern Ireland where this week we have witnessed the power of negotiation in action as a deal on the Protocol was struck. That is mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution in action.

    “Before being appointed Managing Director, I worked with Mediation NI for many years and have witnessed first-hand the difference it has made through its contribution to peace building and conflict resolution in our society.

    “For the organisation to grow, it must evolve and I’m proud of our team and Board for endorsing this ambitious new plan for growth.”

    Mediation NI Chair, Dr Catherine Turner said:
    “Our renewed vision is to work towards a society that handles conflict better and Enda’s appointment, combined with our new strategy, is key to achieving this.”

    Forth Meadow Community Greenway

    Forth Meadow Community Greenway is a new £5.1million EU PEACE IV-funded project to connect existing open spaces in north and west Belfast along a 12km route from Clarendon Playing Fields to the new Transport Hub in the city centre.

    Mediation Northern Ireland and Rubicon Consulting have spent the last 2 years exploring the history, culture and identity of the local areas through which the Greenway passes, and collecting and collating local stories for inclusion on a number of interpretative panels to be installed along the route.

    As part of the project we worked with three local schools Springfield Primary, St Clare’s Primary and Springhill Primary to hear stories from the children and their families and capture these through paintings and drawings.

    Brendan McAllister

    It is with great sadness that we share the news that the founding Director of Mediation NI, Brendan McAllister, has died on Tuesday morning (13th December 2022) following a short illness at the age of 66.

    Few people have done as much for mediation and peacebuilding in Ireland as Brendan. He was our Director for 16 years and helped lead the development of mediation in this part of the world, and beyond. Among many things, he helped bring about police reform; was an advisor to the Parades Commission; and served as Victims Commissioner from 2008 to 2012.

    He went on to work as an international peacemaker with the UN Mediation Support Unit in some of the most challenging conflict zones in the world.

    Brendan brought so much energy and humanity to every interaction he had, and we would not be what we are today without his leadership, guidance, friendship and vision.

    He will be greatly missed by us and so many others.

    Our thoughts are with Elizabeth, Anna, Joseph and Tom, and all who will feel his loss, at this very difficult time.
